The Skating Team began its roots in the SMUXtremists XSeed Team – the nurturing ground for newly introduced, small teams. Growing from strength to strength with increasing number of interested members, the Skating Team branched out officially in October 2007 on its own as the 6th established team in SMUX. It currently stands at about 40 committed and enthusiastic skate lovers.

Owing its newly minted status as an independent team to the dedicated members of the team, the Skating Team is all about the people, passion, and love for the sport. Seeking to be a hub for all skating enthusiasts to gather, various skate-related activities (which are continually introduced) are carried out, to foster a greater emotional attachment to the team. Irregardless of one’s skating skills, whether one lies on the continuum from being a novice to an expert, the team welcomes all with open arms to ignite and spread the love for skating.

One means to spread this passion has been through the beginner’s skating clinics held and open to the SMU community at large; providing interested parties an opportunity to pick up a new skill or increase proficiency in inline skating whilst spreading this love for the sport. Spaces for these clinics are snapped up quickly based on the overwhelming response from students and interested parties. In a bid to give back to the SMU community, the team has also participated in the recent SMU Arts Festival 2008 by tying the sports to the arts scene in SMU; a valuable opportunity to contribute back to SMU while instilling all-roundedness in the team skaters and enhancing team building.

To widen the activity range for members, the Skating Team has explored various disciplines – Leisure, Freestyle, Urban, Inline Hockey and Aggressive Skating. Leisure skaters usually head to East Coast Park (ECP) for their fix of recreational skating from one end of the park to the other. The SMU concourse is the playground for the freestyle skaters, spending hours practicing tricks like slalom and slides. We have weekly urban skating for skaters who challenge themselves through the exploration of urban trails – roads, pavements and park connectors. In 2009, skaters have been newly exposed to a new discipline – Inline Hockey. They get to push their skating skills to a higher level through basic game play. As a learning team, weekly skill development sessions are held the SMU concourse as well, where skaters gather to exchange pointers and ensure the team develops as one coherent, close-knit body – explaining the yearly increasing membership from freshmen, undergraduates and postgraduate students alike.

  • About Us
SMUXtremists (SMUX) was established in 2000 by a group of like-minded students who sought to share their passion for the outdoors with others in the Singapore Management University (SMU). Starting off with just 9 individuals, SMUX has in just a short period of nine years grown to become an established and respectable club within the SMU community. Currently, with a 1000-strong membership base, and managed by a dedicated team of 15 committee members, SMUX is consistently the most active and largest Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Club in SMU.
