SMUX Camp 09

Over 3 hectic days beginning from 09 July 09 all the way to 11 Jul 09, 122 freshmen were put through their paces experiencing many of the outdoor activities SMUXtremists had to offer as the outdoor activity arm of SMU. The camp started with a morning of registration and finding out more about SMUX through the corporate videos of the various SMUX teams, speeches and not forgetting icebreaker games to energize everyone on a beautiful morning in SMU. The rest of the day proceeded with a trek from Bukit Timah to Clementi through a densely vegetated disused railway line. The day ended with a bicycle ride from ECP to Marina Barrage through the CBD area, allowing the freshmen to take in the awesome sights of Singapore from a different perspective that biking on the streets provides.

On the next day, the freshmen were out through a programme that allowed them to experience scuba diving, underwater hockey, a skating clinic and a new outdoor activity known as jumping jacks. Jumping jacks is done by strapping a contraption to our legs, very much akin to a cross between a pogo stick and a stilt, that is strapped to our legs, allowing people to take really huge strides and jump really high. The day ended with a food trail around SMU where everyone was introduced to the great places around SMU to unwind with great company and good food.

On the last day, the freshmen were put through a kayaking orientation programme with a healthy dose of sun, sand and sea on the eastern shores of Singapore. After a draining day in the sun, sand and sea, everyone was gathered back in SMU to be presented with their name tents as a badge of honour to have survived SMUX Camp. A video was also compiled specially to recap the activities held over the past 3 days. Despite the high level of fatigue, many of the freshmen got so bonded to their groups that many decided to have dinner together rather than heading back home straight after the camp was officially over.

Last but not least, SMUX Camp 2009 was arguably one of the most well organized and enjoyable camps on the SMU calendar and it is in no small part due to the hard work put in by the dedicated organizing committee, energetic GLs, a well-equipped SMUX Crew and not forgetting the helpers who tirelessly helped us and helped ensure the success of the camp. We look forward to another awesome SMUX Camp in 2010!

SWET comes to SMU!

SMUX Trekking Team proudly invites the NATAS Singapore Women’s Everest Team (SWET) down to SMU for an eventful night of sharing.

Singapore Women's Everest Team

Singapore Women's Everest Team

For the uninitiated, SWET comprises of 6 women who had successfully summit the world’s highest peak early this year. Besides being the first all-female team from Singapore, they are also unique individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences; bound by a common aim to challenge their boundaries and pursue their desires.

Formed in 2004, they have proven their mettle as one of the toughest climbing teams around, climbing various mountains in their preparation for Everest. Some of their prior expeditions include Mera Peak (Nepal), Siguniang Mountain (Sichuan, China) and Cho Oyu (Tibet).

Click here to check out their photos and find out more about the team.

Come 21st October 2009, we finally have the chance to meet SWET live and in person. Don’t miss this grand opportunity to hear their inspirational stories and to ask them about their motivations and endurances that got them to the highest peak on this Earth.

TOUR DE SINGAPORE (TDS)

Feb’ 09

TDS Feb 09 picture1TDS Feb 09 picture2

TDS was a fulfilling night ride that took place during the midterm break in February 2009. 120-odd participants began their journey at East Coast Park through the heart of the city to the West and back to the East of Singapore again.

Like what the theme suggests, the aim of this ride was to bring participants on a tour of Singapore, and to explore the different areas in Singapore through biking. The various food stops along the way were specially designed to introduce the different delicacies in Singapore to the participants. Some of the places visited were Macritchie Reservoir, Bishan Park, Thomson Prata House, and Simpang Bedok. The whole planning process was a hectic one, as the organizing committee had to run through the route many times over, conducting recces, planning the games, and also ensuring that safety was in no way compromised both during the recces and the actual event day.

During the event, it was a grueling yet fun 70 kilometres for the participants as they biked through the night together. New friendships were forged and existing friendships were further strengthened. Participants gained not just the sense of achievement of being able to complete 70 kilometres, especially for new road bikers, but also the bonding and company of their friends.

Being part of the organizing committee for TDS has been an awesome and refreshing experience. The days leading up to the event might have been hectic, but to see both SMUX members and new participants enjoy the ride thoroughly was in itself, the most rewarding of all. This was indeed the greatest takeaway for all the members of the organizing committee.

Dean of Students Tri-Challenge

The Dean of Students Tri-Challenge is an annual event organized by SMU Fitness works. This competition is only meant for the strongest, fittest, and most enduring of them all, for the feat is no simple task. At these events, your usual biceps, 6-packs and slender aero-dynamical bodies would all be on display, from every corner of SMU.

SMUX, for whatever strange reasons, are not regular competitors in these DOS Tri-Challenge events. However this year, on a spur and a very last minute decision, we decided to send 2 teams, to represent the ‘Orange & Black’ cohort of SMU. These brave souls were more than just competitors; they were warriors, going in cold to a competition we had not much prior experience in. Our 2 teams represented us in both the CCA & Open Category.

SMUXies & SMUXers (CCA Cat):
Spinner: Lester Lim
Swimmer: Ang Xiao Hui
IronMan: Leonarg Ng (C)

Even SMUXier (Open Cat):
Spinner: Benedict Ng
Swimmer: Christina Boon
IronMan: Lim Kian Hean (C)

For honour and glory they went, carrying the banner of SMUX high for all to see; and they didn’t go alone. No team can demand presence and portray a strong challenge without support. Hence we sent our family down, those that bled orange & black, and by no means were we quiet; all the while shouting and cheering for our brothers and sisters on the battlefield, holding our proud banner high for all to see. SMUX had entered the DOS Tri-Challenge, and we weren’t going to relent.
As a result, after the scars, sweat and tears… the Gods Favoured US… FOR WE EMERGED VICTORIOUS!! We finished Podium Winners in both categories, Bronze & Silver respectively. In addition, we had even won the BEST CHEER TEAM! It was a great way to top off our magnificent feat.

We came, we sweated, we suffered, we cheered, and we endured till the very end. A victory not just for our brave warriors, but one for the whole family. For in SMUX, there is no I, there’s only WE.
OUR VICTORY, OUR SMUX!!

Exco Investiture/ Friendship Day

It was not even a month from Chinese New Year Celebration that we gathered once again to celebrate Friendship Day, a.k.a. Valentines’ Day today. Everyone showed up, anxious to find out who exactly are their ‘angels’ and ‘mortals’ they have conversed over the blog for the past month. Every SMUXtremist exchanged glances, and if you looked close enough, those glances seemed to be asking: “Are you THE one?”

But before the long-waited mystery was revealed, we witnessed the investiture of SMUX TEAM EXCO members for 2009. In that short thirty minutes, we witnessed the inaugaration of the SMUXtremists who will bring SMUX to greater heights. It was an emotional moment, especially when the various Team Managers gave touching speeches, thanking their EXCO members for their commitment and motivating them to perform their best. Just as Kian Hean, the Kayaking Team Manager was giving a short speech to my fellow Kayaking Team EXCO members and me, I suddenly felt a great sense of satisfaction. Thoughts of the efforts that the Welfare ICs of various Teams had put in to make this event possible flashed through my mind. Designing and sending out e-mailers, spreading the word around, contacting the caterers, arranging the programmes, preparing the logistics and designing the room to make sure it is filled with ‘love’. Our efforts paid off!

Coming back to reality, the solemn ceremony soon gave way to the long awaited revelation. Games were played to build up the suspense to the revelation. Everyone participated enthusiastically, but at the back of their minds, they only had one thought: to find out who their angel and mortal are. Soon, after much anticipation and suspense, the list of angels and mortals were revealed. Some exclaimed, “I knew it!” while the others were in disbelief, “How could it be you?!” Nevertheless, many exchanged gifts with their beloved angels and mortals, rounding up the night’s event.

Not forgetting, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the emcees for the night, Sameer and Sophia, who stirred up the atmosphere. Thank you!

And to all who attended this event, thank you for making it a success!

SMUXtremists (SMUX) was established in 2000 by a group of like-minded students who sought to share their passion for the outdoors with others in the Singapore Management University (SMU). Starting off with just 9 individuals, SMUX has in just a short period of nine years grown to become an established and respectable club within the SMU community. Currently, with a 1000-strong membership base, and managed by a dedicated team of 15 committee members, SMUX is consistently the most active and largest Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Club in SMU.
