“Canoe polo? How can you fit so many kayaks into a swimming pool? Its too small.” Watching the incredulous look on their faces, I knew that the only way to answer that question was to play the game in an actual swimming pool. The NTU canoe polo team was kind enough to lend us time at their swimming pool, and after a week or two of preparation, my friends sat in their kayaks at one end of the pool, prepared to learn the basics of the game. Over the course of the clinic, we tried ball passing, shooting, practise various braces and rolls, and of course, play an actual game of Canoe Polo. It was a memorable experience, filled with goals, frantic paddling, even more frantic back paddling, and a few kayakers who suddenly found they were upside down. Looking back, I know that it wasn’t my first time playing canoe polo, and it wouldn’t be the last.
