Gunung Datuk Trek

Gunung Datuk is a little known mountain located in the state of Negeri Sembilan, West Malaysia. From 17th to 18th Jan, 40 valiant trekkers from SMUX Trekking Team decided to trek up Gunung Datuk. Interestingly, the final push to the summit was no easy feat, especially for those with fear of heights. The wind was extremely strong and chilly and it blew Terence’s spectacles off! But, the prize of it all: a picturesque display of plantations, mountains and the straits of Malacca; an indescribable portrait of nature. All of us were mesmerized by the majestic view and our cameras kept snapping away, hoping to capture as much memories as we could.  Although the descent was painful on our knees, we had fun bonding while helping each other down safely. The last reward was a sumptuous lunch at A&Ws and an awesome seafood dinner at Taman Gardens. Most importantly, the friendship fostered during this trek will definitely last us a lifetime!

S.K.A.T.E Clinic

S.K.A.T.E clinic (Skating Clinic and Slalom Workshop) is a bi-yearly event organized by SMUX Skating Team to lower the level of entry for all SMU undergraduates and to introduce skating as a healthy and recreational sport.

This one-day event, which is conducted by skaters from SMUX Skating Team, aims to coach people who are interested in learning basic skating skills as well as slalom, an advanced skating skill. 87 participants signed up in total, with 72 beginner skaters and 15 slalom skaters. The whole clinic is conducted in a more personal and friendly methods, where beginner skaters are encouraged to register in a team of 4 to promote more interaction and fun within the group.

The clinic consists of two main sections; the first half of the clinic will be the coaching of participants by the instructors, and the second half will be the carnival style of clinic, where participants are to go from station to station to play games in order to score points. The basic skating skills that the participants will learn during clinic include Standing Up, V-Walk, Stride I/II, Heel Brake, Parallel Turn, T-Brake. The slalom skills that participants will learn include Fish, Snake, Criss Cross, Cross Nelson, Crazy, Double Crazy.

To learn and master all the skills in a three hour session during the S.K.A.T.E clinic is not easy. As such, SMUX Skating Team would greatly encourage S.K.A.T.E clinic participants to continue to join the skaters in our usual Friday skating session to practice and ultimately, master all the skills.

Canoe polo Clinic 09

“Canoe polo? How can you fit so many kayaks into a swimming pool? Its too small.” Watching the incredulous look on their faces, I knew that the only way to answer that question was to play the game in an actual swimming pool. The NTU canoe polo team was kind enough to lend us time at their swimming pool, and after a week or two of preparation, my friends sat in their kayaks at one end of the pool, prepared to learn the basics of the game. Over the course of the clinic, we tried ball passing, shooting, practise various braces and rolls, and of course, play an actual game of Canoe Polo. It was a memorable experience, filled with goals, frantic paddling, even more frantic back paddling, and a few kayakers who suddenly found they were upside down. Looking back, I know that it wasn’t my first time playing canoe polo, and it wouldn’t be the last.

  • About Us
SMUXtremists (SMUX) was established in 2000 by a group of like-minded students who sought to share their passion for the outdoors with others in the Singapore Management University (SMU). Starting off with just 9 individuals, SMUX has in just a short period of nine years grown to become an established and respectable club within the SMU community. Currently, with a 1000-strong membership base, and managed by a dedicated team of 15 committee members, SMUX is consistently the most active and largest Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Club in SMU.
